From December 20 to 26, the MSUPE "Rublevo" Student Center will host an Exhibition of Traditional Russian Costumes of the Odnodvortsy (Single-Homesteader) Estate.
The Odnodvortsy were a unique social estate in the Russian Tsardom and the Russian Empire. They emerged during the reign of Vasily III: they were the sons of boyars (nobles) sent to the southern frontier (the Great Defensive Line) to live in "single homesteads" without serfs. In the 17th century, simpler service people (gunners, streltsy, cossacks) along the Belgorod Defensive Line also began transitioning into this estate. They were pioneers, city-builders, and loyal defenders of the Russian land. This is how the Odnodvortsy estate, with its distinct culture and customs, came into being. Their descendants still live in the territories of modern Tula, Oryol, Lipetsk, Ryazan, Belgorod, Voronezh, Tambov, Kursk, and Penza regions. Descendants also live in Siberia!
This exhibition was previously held at the MSUPE library on Sretenka in the format of "slow dressing" and a fashion show. Guests had the opportunity to become models for a step-by-step demonstration of all costume items and participate in a real fashion show (watch the video).
Now, these amazing stories and outfits await you at the "Rublevo" Student Center. Be sure to visit if you find yourself in the center during the specified days!
On December 20, ethnographer Natalia Skavytina will conduct a lecture-tour for students at the exhibition opening.
