
The International Department of Cultural-Historical Psychology was established in 2002 as a special project of the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education (MSUPE). Since 2012, it has become a joint project of MSUPE and UNESCO and was renamed the UNESCO Chair in Cultural-Historical Psychology of Childhood.
The Department's activities are aimed at developing and expanding the theoretical and experimental foundation of the Cultural-Historical scientific school, analyzing contemporary trends in this field, and representing the Cultural-Historical Psychology school in the international scientific community.
The Department's key objectives include advancing the ideas of Cultural-Historical Psychology and Activity theory, conducting research and development in this field, and training teacher-researchers and international experts in psychological and pedagogical studies of childhood (including early childhood, preschool, and school-age development). These specialists possess a strong theoretical and practical foundation and are proficient in both traditional and contemporary research conducted within the framework of Cultural-Historical Psychology and the Activity-based approach.
Scientific Work of the DepartmentThe department's research activities focus on pressing issues of social practice, guided by the cultural-historical approach. From 2012 to 2015, the department participated in the international research project *"Confronting the Challenges of New Media: Global Perspectives on Youth Development and Education"* in collaboration with scholars from Germany, Greece, the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil. The project resulted in the publication of a collective monograph.
The Department prepares materials for the international scientific journal Cultural-Historical Psychology, published by MSUPE. The journal is indexed in the Web of Science Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and Scopus.
The department is a graduate for the Master's degree program "Cultural and historical Psychology and the activity approach in education", implemented within the framework of the training area 44.04.02 Psychological and pedagogical education (qualification "Master's degree", full-time education, 2 years of study, implemented since 2014). The program is attended by the presenters specialists in the field of cultural and historical psychology from Russia, USA, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Canada. The department's educational projects involve leading Russian and foreign professors working in in line with cultural and historical psychology. Among them: A.A. Margolis, B.D. Elkonin, P.A. Sergomanov, N.N. Nechaev, V. T. Kudryavtsev, I.A. Burlakova, V.K. Zaretsky, E.I. Isaev, G.Daniels (Great Britain), S. Vedgetti (Italy), N.N. Veresov (Australia), M. Dafermakis (Greece), K. Plakitsi (Greece), etc.
The Department is the organizer of the annual International Summer University The International Society for Cultural and Activity Research (ISCAR) for graduate students and young scientists at MGPPU, which combines intensive training a program and a space for informal communication and exchange of ideas with well-known domestic and foreign scientists in fields of cultural and historical psychology.
The research activity of the department is carried out in the field of current problems of social practice on the basis of theoretical and methodological provisions of cultural and historical psychology and the activity approach. The main directions of scientific work of the department are:
- Development of experimental research in the field of cultural and historical psychology and the activity approach
- Popularization of achievements of cultural and historical psychology and activity approach in Russia and abroad
- Development of scientific contacts with foreign psychologists in the field of cultural and historical psychology and activity management approach
