Alla Kholmogorova Participated in the III International Congress "Obesity and Metabolic Disorders: Conscious Reboot"

From October 9 to 11, the III International Congress "Obesity and Metabolic Disorders: Conscious Reboot" was held at the venue of the V.I. Dedov National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology of the Russian Ministry of Health (Endocrinology Scientific Center). The holding of this event is becoming a certain tradition. For the third year in a row, the Endocrinology Center, under the leadership of Olga Vladimirovna Vasyukova, Head of the Center for Treatment and Prevention of Metabolic Diseases and Obesity, has been a key platform for exchanging experiences, discussing complex clinical cases, and developing unified standards for managing patients with obesity and metabolic disorders. This year, the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education (MSUPE) was among the congress organizers. The congress brought together over 5,500 specialists – scientists, physicians, healthcare organizers, and representatives of medical organizations from different countries – to discuss fundamental and practical issues in the fight against obesity and metabolic disorders.

On October 10, as part of the international congress, sessions dedicated to the problems of eating disorders (ED) were held: "Eating Disorders. From Emaciation to Excess Weight. How to Help?" and "Excess Stress – Excess Weight. How are Obesity and Mental Health Connected?". The lead moderator of these sessions was Alla Borisovna Kholmogorova, Dean of the Faculty of Counseling and Clinical Psychology, together with Maxim Borisovich Sologub, Chief Physician of the Center for the Study of Eating Disorders, and Anna Vladimirovna Vasilyeva, Chief Researcher of the Department for Treatment of Borderline Mental Disorders and Psychotherapy, Head of the International Department of the V.M. Bekhterev National Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology of the Russian Ministry of Health.

The sessions dedicated to eating disorders (ED) were one of the most intensive and interdisciplinary events in the congress program. Leading specialists participated in the discussions – psychologists, psychiatrists, heads of departments from leading medical centers specializing in the treatment of ED:

  • Chernov Nikita Vladimirovich, Clinical Psychologist, Head of the Department of Psychotherapeutic Care and Social Rehabilitation at City Clinical Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 of the Moscow Department of Health
  • Gordeeva Elena Anatolyevna, Head of Department, Psychiatrist at the G.E. Sukhareva Scientific and Practical Center for Mental Health of Children and Adolescents of the Moscow Department of Health
  • Vasilyeva Anna Vladimirovna, Chief Researcher of the Department for Treatment of Borderline Mental Disorders and Psychotherapy, Head of the International Department of the V.M. Bekhterev National Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology of the Russian Ministry of Health
  • Flitman Ekaterina Dmitrievna, Medical Psychologist at the Center for Treatment and Prevention of Metabolic Diseases and Obesity of the V.I. Dedov National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology of the Russian Ministry of Health, Candidate of Medical Sciences

The sessions addressed the following issues:

  • Integration of endocrinological, psychotherapeutic, and dietological approaches.
  • New models for early diagnosis and prevention of ED.
  • Modern protocols for psychotherapy and medical support.
  • Organization of interdisciplinary teamwork involving physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, and dietitians.

The presentations by experts from the MSUPE Faculty of Counseling and Clinical Psychology particularly attracted the attention of the conference participants: Dean, Doctor of Psychological Sciences Alla Borisovna Kholmogorova, and faculty graduate, medical psychologist Ekaterina Flitman.

A.B. Kholmogorova, together with graduates of the Faculty of Counseling and Clinical Psychology, medical psychologists from the Center for the Study of Eating Disorders D.A. Grigorieva and A.D. Korabelshchikova, delivered a report titled "Selective Eating Behavior: Main Manifestations and Formation Mechanisms." The report highlighted macrosocial, individual, and familial factors in the formation of selective eating behavior and also addressed current issues related to the diagnosis and provision of comprehensive psychological assistance to people suffering from eating disorders and obesity.

Ekaterina Flitman, a graduate of the Faculty of Counseling and Clinical Psychology and a current medical psychologist at the Center for Treatment and Prevention of Metabolic Diseases and Obesity of the V.I. Dedov National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology of the Russian Ministry of Health, shared the results of clinical studies conducted under the guidance of A.B. Kholmogorova on the problem of comorbidity of obesity and depression in children and adolescents. In her speech, Ekaterina emphasized the need to implement comprehensive prevention models, highlighting the importance of an interdisciplinary approach and early identification of at-risk groups. According to research data, children with obesity exhibit significant anxiety and social difficulties, requiring the involvement of a psychologist in the team work of specialists.

Participants of the session noted the high scientific and professional level of the presented reports and their practical significance for clinical and counseling psychology. The congress became an important platform for specialists interested in comprehensive approaches to the treatment and prevention of ED and obesity.

The congress contributed to the consolidation of efforts by specialists from various fields to overcome global challenges in the sphere of mental health. This platform became key for discussing interdisciplinary solutions, exchanging experiences, and forming a new strategy in the field of mental health protection and prevention of eating disorders among the population, and the presentations by leading specialists made a valuable contribution to the development of modern clinical and counseling psychology.
