From a Pin to a Hat: Ethnopsychologists Discussed the Role of Intercultural Competence and Sensitivity in the Perception of the Image of England
On October 9, the next meeting of the Ethno Club of the Department of Ethnopsychology and Psychological Problems of Multicultural Education, Faculty of Social Psychology, MSUPE, took place. The moderator, as tradition holds, was Elena Andreevna Alexandrova.
The meeting on the theme "From a Pin to a Hat" was dedicated to the ethnopsychology of modern English people. Participants talked about how the image of the country and people changes in historical perspective depending on who is looking. In Russia, English culture is known and loved; we can enjoy brilliant translations of classical and modern works, and there are a number of wonderful film adaptations of these works in Russian.
Ethnopsychologists discussed interdisciplinary methodology and analyzed various sources that help understand to what extent the image of English culture created outside England corresponds to the English people's own perceptions. Conclusions were drawn about how understanding the ethnopsychology of peoples is important for intercultural communication, and how broadening one's horizons helps improve the level of intercultural competence and sensitivity.
