More about the meeting
Traditionally, ideas about the existential approach are associated with helping a person in borderline life situations, with the problems of freedom, responsibility, meaning, loneliness, and death. Undoubtedly, all these themes are in the focus of existential analysis. But one must not lose sight of other aspects of human existence that are also extremely important for attaining the fullness of life.
In existential analysis, we are interested in the person in their world: everything they have to deal with, but even more so – their decisions and ways of relating
- to the surrounding world
- to their own life and its tasks
- to their own uniqueness and the uniqueness of others
- to values and meaning
What does turning to these questions give a person? It helps to live life with inner agreement in relation to oneself and the world.
If a person encounters obstacles that are insurmountable for them, they find themselves cut off from the world, their own life, themselves and others, their own values and meaning. This leads to emptiness, the experience of inner passivity and abandonment, and endless inner torment. In this case, the goal of the work is to help the person find their own decisions and once again "take their life into their own hands". The counselor walks this path together with the client, helping them restore the lost dialogue with themselves and the surrounding world.
Existential analysis also has its own clinical model for working with people who have various mental disorders.
A psychotherapeutic approach is not just a set of tools and techniques, but a special "professional lens" through which we look at clients, their problems and the causes of these problems, at ourselves, and at the relationships between us. Therefore, from our point of view, when choosing a method, it is important that this "lens" suits us. Our lecture is an opportunity to try on the view of existential analysis.
